Question mic showing unplugged

my headphones have a plug in mic (steelseries arctis 1 wired) and when i plug the mic in it just shows the jack mic unplugged and defaults to my laptop mic
ive checked if its all plugged in well and it seems like it is

What is the make and model of your laptop? How many jacks does it have e.g. are the headphone and mic jacks separate? If it has 2 jacks, one for mic and one for headphones, are you using the Y adaptor cable supplied with the headphones?

dell g15 5515, only 1 audio jack for i assume both headphone and mic

Yes, that is the headphone mic combo port so you do have it connected properly. Are you able to try this headset with another device like an android phone or desktop computer either with combo port or using the adapter? You need to verify that the mic works with something otherwise you may have to consider warranty repair for either the laptop or headset.

i tested another laptop and it worked fine
