I'm trying to build a good sever for web hosting, personal storage, and possibly game sever hosting (not all at once). I'd like to pay no more than $600, but I might be willing to go a little over budget. I'd like to build the system myself and also prefer Intel over AMD.

I would appreciate builds on pcpartpicker.com

System Requirements

  • 2x 1TB HDDs (in raid 1)
    Intel processor
    Micro-ATX case
    8+ GB of ram

*This is not a full parts list*

I'm not sure if my price-point is realistic or not but, at the end of the day, I'm here for advice and open to suggestion on how I should go about building this. I've never delved into creating a sever before and would appreciate any advice that you guys have to offer.

Thanks,
Ray

Love the DIY attitude, best way to learn and it's fun. Just curious why you prefer intel over amd in regards to a server. Gaming, although i use AMD, i can't argue against Intels single thread advantage but when it comes to almost everything else the price you pay for intel is crap against AMD.

Intel Server Build:

I added an i5 to the build as you shouldn't need an i7 for what you said you will be using it for and if you want to go a little cheaper do not get an i3 as the g4560 and i3 are pretty close in regards to multi thread and the g4560 is cheaper.

the hard drives are consumer grade so if you want something a little more efficient try western digital reds and if you need more speed then get...
do you need energy efficiency? why does the processor need to be fairly new? are you familiar with configuring and running server OS?

reasons I ask are because it's a lot of different routes you can go with a server and the needs you provided are just a tad vague.

if you want plug and play i'd say a qnap/synology nas and a cheap 4 thread laptop

if you want a little more power and not break the bank, best imho price/performance DIY consumer server would have to host a FX 6300 due to the multi threaded capabilities for the price.

if you want the closest your gonna get to professional without breaking the bank, dell power edge t130

all just my humble suggestions. and i have worked with all 3 personally and they all get the job done.

I'm going to add some more detail to the post. I don't want to buy a pre-built system, thanks for the suggestions though.

AMD server just in case:

Thank you very much for the builds, I think they will be sufficient.
