Question Micro SD card works in USB adapter but not SD adapter

I have a 16GB micro SD card that for some reason works (read/write) in a USB adapter, but when I put it in an SD adapter, it doesn't register that anything at all was inserted.

What I've tried:
  1. Using 3 other SD adapters -> same result
  2. Using 3 other (512MB, 1GB, 8GB) micro SDs in the adapters -> All work
  3. Inserting into raspberry pi (original intended use) -> Doesn't boot
  4. Reformatting (FAT32) -> Same results
  5. Inserting into phone (Galaxy S4) -> Says SD is blank or unsupported file system as asks to reformat. Reports successful reformat, but then says the same thing and all files are still on the micro SD. Cannot write.
  6. Using Disk Management and Minitool Partition Wizard to detect - nothing detected when in SD adapter
  7. Using CHKDSK when in SD adapter - "Cannot open volume for direct access" (ie nothing detected).

Any ideas on what is causing this?

check this thread post and thread.

it's probably because that card is too big (density wise at 16GB) for your older sd reader. that is the reason the old, and smaller ones work.

I used the following search string without quotes in googe, and this was just under your link at top

"micro SD card works in USB adapter but not in sd adapter"
That thread is about SD vs SDHC. More information can be found at https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/choices/file_system/index.html.
While the 512MB and 1GB are only SD, the 8GB micro SD is also SDHC and it works fine, so I don't think that's the issue.
