Microphone cant click on set default

In the control panel, I click on microphone but the "set default" button isn't working.

Thanks, I put in a 2nd mike and options came alive.
My main problem is that speech recognition stopped. I bought a 2nd mike but same thing. I've gone through Windows 7 instructions but I can't get speech in. Any ideas?

If you've been able to go through all the steps properly but you just don't get any sounds being recorded or you get static being recorded when you use the sound recorder in windows then your problem may lie with the motherboard/sound card.

Someone came round and looked at my computer. He switched off most of the processes that came with startup and the speech recognition came alive.
