Microphone doesn't work

Hello everybody
I have been struggling for a while with my computer because i just cant seem to be able to get a microphone to work. I have even tried the trick where you use headphones as a mic. I waan be able to talk to other players in games.
My Computer
Windows 7
500gb sata hard drive
nvidia 9600gt 512mb
sound drivers - nvidia virtual audio device
core two duo e8400 processor
550w powersupply
4gb ddr2 ram
p5nsli motherboard
i have tried with microphones that are on other headphones, but they dont work and i cant even see them in the recording devices tab
ughh its soo annoying

It is because you don't have a splitter cable. Basically what that does is separate the audio from your mic. I just got one from a shop for about $5.
