Microphone Mutes Itself

While using my microphone, in my case with voice recognition software, my microphone will mute itself. I have reinstalled the driver, checked for malware and checked to make certain none of the settings allow software programs to self regulate the volume control. What next?
That would be the Master Controller on my Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7. I have a CONEXANT microphone built into the computer which I'm using. CONEXANT was last updated 12/1/15. I downloaded the voice recognition, Dragon Speak 12/15/16. Dragon Speak support says to use another microphone. Toshiba support says to pay them to fix software. Not convinced on either count.

Thank you for all the suggestions. The final option was to roll back Microsoft Windows prior to a January 14 update. I'm creating this response with my Dragon Speak program.
The only instances I have heard of a microphone muting itself was hardware failure or driver failure. If you reinstalled the driver, that might eliminate driver failure. However, did you remove the current driver and install? Or just reinstall the driver itself?

Does your microphone only mute itself while using DragonSpeak? Do other programs work okay with it?

Uninstalled and reinstalled as suggested and still no change. Now the Device Manager shows Intel Display Audio and High Definition Audio Device as my two audio drivers rather than Intel and Conexant. Conexant still shows in my Program Files, however.
