microphone not working, i can hear them speak, but they cannot hear me

First off connector is the microphone usb or 3.5 jack? If its the jack is it plugged into an audio output or microphone in put.
Also go the the volume slider in the tray on the bottom left of windows right click on it and select recording devices. Is the microphone detected there? if it is can it detect any sound?
