Microphone not working on ALL soundcards (including USB soundcard)

I'm using a Windows 7 desktop with an onboard Realtek soundcard and a Syba USB soundcard. Speakers work fine on both but the microphone doesn't work on either. The microphone is verified to be working. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, standard 3.5mm mic. I have a few other mics, all verified to work, that don't work with either of the soundcards. I think Windows is disabling the microphones behind the scenes, maybe? It's not muted and I've tested all levels and boosts.

I don't know why. That's what I'm trying to figure out.

The built-in soundcard, maybe. I tested the USB soundcard on a different computer and everything works fine there.

The built-in soundcard, maybe. - the Realtek chip? Check if it says its working in Device Manager.
