The in-built microphone in my laptop (gigabyte aero 14) wasn't working today, so I tried the microphone built into my headphones and that didn't work either, but a usb mic did.
I then checked for driver updates (realtek audio) and mine were up to date, so I uninstalled and reinstalled them and it still doesn't work.
I then tried running linux mint on a memory stick and it didn't work but the drivers weren't installed in this case

Has anyone encountered this problem?
Is it a software or hardware issue?

Solution
Make sure that it is not muted in Volume Mixer. Right-click the Windows speaker icon in the System Tray and select "recording devices" and make sure it is not muted. You may have to right-click on the microphone and select "enable".
