Microphone Problems. need help!

Hey guys, I just finished building my PC yesterday and it went fantastic. It all works great except im having trouble with using a microphone. When I plug it in, nothing happens, it doesn't hear me at all. I've tried several mics. The motherboard I have is ASUS M5A99FX 2.0 pro. Need some help with this. The audio works perfect, set up surround sound and everything and it works great, its just the microphone.

Go into Control Panel-->Sound-->Recording tab, make sure you choose the correct microphone and set it as default.

I've done all of that. Is it true that you have to buy a headset made for a pc because the pins are different? I've been trying the earphones for my phone...

Yes, that's correct. You need microphone for PC, or headset with microphone attached. Earphone doesn't work with PC even it has microphone built-in.
