Microphone really quiet?

I currently have a Intel DH61WW motherboard and the mic port (I think) isn't working properly.

Tried 3 mics (Astro A40 mic/Standard 3.5mm mic/BM-800) in the port and all 3 are quiet even when the volume/boost is maxed out.

(Yes I know the BM-800 SHOULD have a phantom power supply but I don't have it yet so I'm making do.

I've tried installing the drivers fresh and still quiet with all mics, any ideas?

BIOS is fully updated, still hasn't solved the matter. Could it just be a malfunctioning port?

Yeah I think that's the best option, although I am getting a new motherboard & cpu soon. But a soundcard with optical would be great so I could use my headset properly.

Is it worth buying a soundcard for say £15 or would it best to buy one £30+? What's the difference going to be?

I really do not know about cheaper sound cards but I do have an old sound blaster live card that was very good maybe have a look on ebay
