H.265 is still better from a technical standpoint, but if they want to push for more royalties then they're going to push companies like MS towards other codecs. For a lot of things VP9 is "good enough", and H.265 is still available for those who want the best.

Regardless support for more codecs baked-in is always nice.

If you're going to talk about H.265 then you should probably talk about VP10 since it's the best comparison. The whole point of the VP codecs and Alliance for Open Media is to eliminate the royalties for codecs.

But H.265 is out. VP10 is still quite early in its development, so comparing a production codec to one that doesn't even exist yet doesn't really make a ton of sense.
