Hi,

I have just installed Windows 10 and am playing with he new browser, Edge. I have found that I cannot change the default search provider and also that the search from address bar feature doesn't work, which is really annoying and I will not experiment further with the browser if I cannot fix this problem.

I know how you are supposed to be able to change the default search provider, but it doesn't work. I have navigated to Google, opening up the settings and gone into advanced settings and then added Google as a new search option (as default). The box that tells me my search provider now says Google. This remains the case if I close the settings and open them up again-Google is set as my default search provider.

However, if I type something in the address bar that is not a website eg. 'BBC news' the browser hangs for a while before telling me that it can't reach this page and tells me to make sure that I have the correct URL. The search from address bar feature is not working. Further, it provides me with an option to search for what I want and when I do so it searches using Bing, despite the fact that I have set it to use Google.

Is there anyone else who had this problem and knows how to fix it? I am finding it frustrating searching and finding pages saying "Oh it's SUPER EASY to change your default search in Edge, just go into the settings and change it!" when this does not work for me. I have tried restarting the browser and even my PC but to no avail.

Thanks.

Open an elevated command prompt by typing "CMD" into Start, right-clicking Command Prompt, and selecting "Run as Administrator. Run "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth." Reboot your PC, then run "sfc /scannow." This whole process may take several minutes.

Hi, I know this is an old thread now, but I had the same problem and found the answer - you actually need to enable searching for your search provider in Internet Explorer for it to also work in Edge. Go to Internet Explorer --> Settings --> Manage Add-Ons --> Search Providers --> select your default search provider --> at the bottom check the box that says to "Search in the address bar and the search box on the new tab page". Close Internet Explorer, restart Edge and it should work! 🙂

Thank you so much to andrewjamesgriffin! I have been having this problem for years and have never found a solution until now but his solution definitely works!

Thank you slashgeek! This worked for me.

This sounds promising but I don't see an option for "Manage Add-ons" in the Edge browser in Windows 10. Is there another way to select this option in Edge v38.14393.0.0?
