Note that the vast majority of issues involve the new strict firewall. Odds
are that all you have to do is add T2 to the "allowed to open connections"
list.

(I've got automatic updates disabled on my XP machines until I hear more
definitive experiences with SP2. There's also a registry key you can set to
block just SP2 and still get other security updates. The block is
automatically ignored after two months, allowing SP2 to force its way
through.)

....along with Nero, StarCraft, a slew of Unreal titles, Freedom Force, a
slew of McAfee titles, RealPlayer, SimCity4, a slew of Norton titles,
ZoneAlarm 5.0.590, and Yahoo Messenger, along with several pages more that
may or may not be worth mentioning.

Yup, this sounds like a great update.

.... and when I mentioned that some *may* have problems with SP2, boy did
it cause agro in a newsgroup where I'm known to be a Linux user.

I keep being berated for not upgrading to XP, but I figure I've got
enough 'agro' with Win98/Me as it is, so why add more?

If Win98 does what you want, you have little reason to upgrade.

The firewall is actually easy to configure and is comparable to a
commercial firewall from what I've seen so far.

The one other change that SP2 has brought that is causing some problems
is the restriction of raw TCP/IP packets. Some low-level network
utilities have stopped working.

I've been using it since RC2 and really haven't had any problems. I've
had two problems that I thought were caused by XP2. The first was an
exception error in Vice City, which turned out to be a mod gone bad,
even though I thought I had uninstalled the mod.

The second was the complete loss of sound in Doom 3. At first, I was
convinced it was SP2, since it was working fine before I installed the
service pack. Then, I remembered that I had also installed Total
Recorder Pro. Sure enough, when I changed the audio hardware setting in
the audio control panel back to my Sound Blaster, Doom 3's sound worked
again.

As for Tribes 2, it works fine from what I've seen, even without any
firewall modifications. I just played a game.

My gripe about XP is its got seemingly more security issues than all
previous releases, some of the legal issues they tried to pull with the
EULA and that, even with the services changed it seems to have too much
bloat.

Pardon my slowness, but my would the use of the recording program break
things?

Every security-related kernel update I've seen in the last couple of years
addresses local vulnerabilities. You have to be logged in to the machine to
exploit them. Do you have any other local users to worry about? If not, you
could safely roll back.

Linux is my server of choice, but I still look mostly at a 2k or XP screen.
Albeit safely connected behind a Linux-based firewall. (The home system is
behind a Linksys router, but that box runs Linux under the hood.)

Hmm. I'm also sat behind a router, which has a basic firewall set up
anyway (which works, as demonstrated by a wannabe-hacker in an IRC
channel, who then went on to deny his attempts).

Nah, only myself can figure this PC/OS out. :)

I'll bear that in mind for when the next kernel panic hits.

TotalRecorder Pro isnt just an ordinary recording program. It installs a
sound driver that sits between your apps and your sound card so you can
capture the WAV data as it hits the card.

Why would you want this? Well, you can record audio from any source,
including streaming audio. In fact, with some streaming sources, it does
something to make it play back the audio at super speed. I'm not sure
what it does exactly, but I'm guessing it's something like Gear.
