Dear Microsoft, If you want me to upgrade from my perfectly functional Windows 7 to Windows 10, you have to give me something of value in return. I don't care about Cortana and would disable it. I don't care about your "store" and "apps." I don't care about having Skype built-in. All these are fluff. I don't want Windows 10 encryption which is conditionnal on logging in with a Microsoft account... and won't work on my 4-year-old system because the mobo has no TPM.

As I made the mistake of buying Windows 7 64 Home Premium instead of Pro, here is what would make me upgrade to Windows 10 : include Bitlocker for free with Windows 10 Home. Bitlocker is the only feature that I miss with my current Windows 7 OS.
After some time using Windows 10, I have to say I'm happy with the upgrade. I agree, the Store was merely glanced at and then hasn't been touched again. I disabled Cortana, like most do, but not for the same reasons. The "Value" you're getting out of Windows 10 is definitely not from these Fluff apps that you're referring to.

I'm using both a 7 year old i7-920 system and an older C2Q Q6600 system. I've upgraded both to Windows 10. I'm able to log in with a Microsoft Account without issue and I am not 'forced' to have encryption on. Although, for me to turn on Bitlocker I would need a TPM for these systems. Of which, as is your case, I cannot do. Thankfully, there are other applications that can encrypt your files just as easily.

I installed Win10 on my 2-1/2 yr old Toshiba laptop. I had endless problems and BSOD with the auto-updated windows drivers. I tried to do a roll-back to Win7, and guess what - it failed. After a week of battling I formatted and reinstalled Win7. Toshiba has no plans to write Win10 drivers for this particular model - so up the creek there. Why force upgrades on incompatible systems?

I have only 2 major issues with Win10 (everything else I can live with) - forced updates, and privacy issues. I do have Win10 running on number of customers desktop PC's without problems, but I must say that Win10 feels "unfinished."

I still have a few customers steadfastly refusing to move from XP. Why? Because it was rock-solid and worked on everything. Win7 was also solid. Win8.1 was OK technically, but the interface was horrible. Win10 should have been called 8.2a and IMHO falls far short of what SHOULD have been an essential upgrade. Personally, I'm not upgrading from 7 until I have no other choice.

"... may come off as an aggressive move from Microsoft ..."

It doesn't merely "come off" as an aggressive move, it is an aggressive move. Stop sugar coating these antics by MS. It's pretty obvious where this is all heading, a subscription model for Windows, and that sure as heck isn't something MS will do because it would in any way save the customer money. The lack of critical analysis of the way MS has evolved Windows in recent years just feels like customers are being slow-boiled frog-style, eating away at our degree of control bit by bit.

Why is it standard news sites seem to be following all this with a more sensible eye? eg.:

Tech sites are the ones which should be leading the defense against this sort of strong arm tactic by a monopoly company.

XBMC bro, XBMC.

The experiments that I have done with alternate HTPC applications I could not get my tv tuners to work with, but the setup in WMC is a snap. (XBMC/Kodi has a very sharp interface though)

(My issues could have been that WMC was installed and reserving the tuners.)

I'm about to finish my HTPC setup in a few weeks/months. I picked up an Nvidia Shield Console and have been using Plex for my Home Theater rips. AndroidTV is an excellent 10 foot UI and has alot of the commonly looked for android apps (This is one of the only uses of Android OS/UI that I like). With Netflix, Hulu, Plex, and soon TabloTV or Channel Master DVR for OTA and recording, I will be all set for cord-cutting and full HTPC setup with a wife/child usable interface. The Shield really lets you consolidate devices and technologies. Plus then I can wireless stream my PC games at full graphics to the Shield and enjoy a free console gaming experience with all the eye candy of PC over Xbox and PS. There are a ton more uses for the Shield I haven't even setup yet but this should hold me for a while.

I think the issue with WMC and tuners is that MS is working on getting the XbOne to be your HTPC and wanted it certified for encrypted broadcasts (or whatever the cert is). WMC was one of the only tech available for that use back then and MS has the resources to get it done again but in a way that they don't have to keep users stuck on Win7. They can put it on a device that will keep up with UWP Apps and the WaaS model.

I upgraded my gaming computer to Windows 10 and have no problem. However, if I need to work from home using my "business" PC, the only way to connect back to the mothership is software that ONLY supports Windows 7. Unless Microsoft is going to come shovel my driveway or find a cure for the common cold, they're going to need to hold off forcing this update down the throat of "normal" users. The hoops one must jump through to avoid the upgrade are ridiculous.

Oh, and Microsoft, FYI, my Windows 8.1 tablet does NOT have the room for Windows 10. Please stop trying to force that to upgrade as well.

50/50 i have 6 pc and half have been updated , of course not the 2 that i use but for the most part my mothers works fine and the others are buggy , correction 2 are updated i have tried the 3 one about 10 times and it keeps failing so i just put back to windows 7 i am sticking with windows 7 until i cant , the problem is not the up grade for the most part the damn problem is micro soft is putting out unfinished crap and then forcing you to take it ..i do not like to be forced to do anything so i am going to learn lenox and see if that works for me and i am sure others will do the same , one things many Americans are tired of and that being force fed crap.

This right here. Spot on!

Maybe some tech sites are spinning this to be friendly for Microsoft because they're afraid MS will cut off access and leave them out of announcements/tech reveals.

Another concerning aspect is the work that Microsoft is putting into getting Windows 10 adopted in China right now, directly working with the Chinese government.

Given the level of user data tracked with the default settings, Windows 10 seems intentionally built to provide backdoor spying to governments, which could be a very lucrative business for Microsoft, as intelligence agencies in many countries (including the US) have been throwing money at tech companies for greater access.

That level of cooperation in spying with even the best of governments is questionable, but it is immoral for them to be working with in tandem with China, facilitating government spying at such a level that it's considered a human rights violation.

A web search for how to disable this will find articles that explain how to disable this. First uninstall update KB3035583, reboot the system, then run Window Update, check for updates, and then hide KB3035583.

This is bad business in my opinion because Microsoft is essentially forcing Windows 10 on me, as a result I had to disable Windows updates more then 8 months a go for Windows 7 as this policy of Forcing Windows 10 down my throat was screwing up my laptop.. The hardware in my laptop is to old and not supported by hardware manufacturers any more, sucks that Microsoft does not care about some of there customers and the fact that they may not have the money to just run out and buy a new computer that is Windows 10 ready. I can run my laptop on Windows 10 but all the drivers for my laptop would be legacy drivers and I don't want that.

I'm saving up for a new computer but it will be a while yet before I can buy a new computer that is Windows 10 ready, in the mean time I have to continue making do with my old out dated laptop.

Here's a nifty little tool to keep Windows 10 from installing and keep you aware of Microshaft's shenanigan's regarding their deployment of the OS: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

It's called GWX Control Panel and I recommend the stand-alone version.

I am NOT upgrading to Windows 10 ever! I have Windows 8.1 with only 4 additional updates outside of the updates that were installed by the manufacturer of my gaming laptop prior to shipping it to the store. Why? It's because when I add updates to my gaming laptop, essential software that allow safe overclocking of my CPUs, hardware monitoring software, and a driver that allows me to switch my mouse track pad to a number pad become totally disabled and the software crashes! So after installing updates for Adobe Reader, Silverlight, .Net Framework 4.5.2 and 4.6, I turned off automatic updates!

GET THIS! Even though I turned off automatic updating the first time, somehow the setting changed to "Install updates automatically (Recommended) and installed 192 updates in the background! Before I noticed it, the updates were nearly finished! So I let the install finish and yet again it disabled important software and drivers that are key to my gaming laptop's full functionality!

I did a system restore and the updates were removed and I again disabled automatic updating! And wouldn't you know, my settings were changed again, but this time it was changed to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them". 197 updates were waiting to be installed this time! WTH!

Instead of doing a system restore again, I took the time to hide all 197 updates one by one! Took a bit of time. After that I disabled automatic updating for the third time! As of the date of my comment, the setting has not changed on it's own and remains disabled! Good!

My MSI GT80 Titan SLI-001 performs much, much better now! I also have 3rd party security software and additional settings that protect my pc and internet router, so I'm satisfied with not upgrading to Windows 10 and only having a very minimal amount of updates for Windows 8.1 that I know will not render installed OEM software and drivers useless!

I would happily made the upgrade of my XP machine (that runs W10 nicely, I tested it) but they want my € to do so.
One less from the 1B target

You know how many roll back tickets I've done because of this decision? Some devices DO NOT WORK IN WINDOWS 10. Then the conversion back fails and they have to pay me $200 to come in and back up thier data and reinstall their original operating system. Assholes.

The author makes it sound like rolling back is a piece of cake. I am here to tell you that neither updating to 10 or rolling back from it is easy and in fact it breaks more software than it should, especially since it says it is compatible with my system and software.

I did not mind 10 all that much when I used it and found workarounds for the stupid crap, but the deal killer for me was the idea that Microsoft has where it thinks it knows the best drivers for my system. In all the years of Windows it has NEVER known the best drivers and even when it says a driver has failed and I try and install one that does work I get this ignorant alert telling me the best driver is already installed. How can a software that cant make a driver work claim the best one is installed and then push it to their new OS to replace drivers I setup with their own inferior crap? That combined with the given that this OS is going to end up a subscription model and I have to say the day has finally come to start using Linux on all my systems and FINALLY I can say good riddance to this crapware called Windows!

I am leaving Toms Hardware, if you ever decide to get out of bed with Microsoft let me know. I love the articles but I refuse to be coerced into believing something that is a total lie because you are afraid to speak the truth!

I had seen the icon of Win 10 on my laptop's task bar, but not on my build of one and a half years of my desktop where I bought the Win 7 OS. How come I didn't get it on my desktop, if I choose to use it like I have on my laptop? I'm still considering to have Win 10 there and Win 7 on the desktop.

Looks like I'll be moving to Linux Mint and Steam O/S on my home PC's when W 7 support ends. There are plenty of reasonable replacements for most of the apps I currently use. I'm just tired of MS and their sleazy, bullying, and invasive business practices. I can no longer justify tolerating their nonsense.

thing to look out for is updates that say nothing about win-10 or anything about a upgrader but the same files are in them
