Microsoft Makes Windows 10 'Recommended' Update, Not 'Required'

These lame attempts to trick customers into thinking that Windows 10 is the future is just plain embarrassing. MSFT needs to just stop it. Windows 7 just works for the vast majority of those still inclined to run Windows. The rest have moved off to OS X or Linux and are delighted to have been freed from the MSFT concentration camps. The only lot who should move to Win 10 are those who bought into Windows 8.x and are for some unfortunate reason are stuck in the proprietary windows ecosystem.

The only recommended upgrade for Windows is to Linux. Period. End of Line.

I pointed that out a few posts back that the files to do upgrade to 10 is in updates that don't say anything about 10 - Microsoft got to stoop to trickery ..


when you get up dates in just wait a day or 2 and google search each kb# and see whats reported like this as example to read and see if it something you really want to install or decline ?? that's the best way to weed things out ??

Microsoft needs to stop trying to sneak the upgrade. That they feel they need to trick users into upgrading should give them pause. Of course, MS is not known for thinking things through.

A simple option in Windows Update that says: "Free upgrade to Windows 10" instead of burying it in a KB number and a generic description that doesn't mention Windows 10 is what an honest company would do.

 
For those who don't want Windows 10, go to Windows Update>Change Settings. Under important updates there is a box with a arrow. Clicking it will show a drop down menu. Choose either "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" or "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". After that go back to windows update. In the bottom left hand corner there is the installed updates option. Click that. Using the search bar find the following updates and uninstall them. KB3068708, KB3022345, KB3075249, KB3080149, KB2952664, KB2976978, KB3022345, KB3035583, KB3123862. After that restart your PC. When you go back into windows update the updates you just un-installed will either re-appear as recommended or important. Right click on these updates (one at a time) and click "Hide Update" for each one. There you go. You'll still have the "Get Windows 10" icon in your system tray but you'll no longer get the annoying pop ups telling you to upgrade. Also there's no way you can accidentally install win 10 on your pc now because without those updates it's not possible.
 


thanks for this list. i'll be going through it on all of my machines, and i guess soon enough going back to Linux or other ways of getting an OS.
 


This is not a proper solution. At best it's an illegal band aid, which isn't always going to work or necessarily be available. As new builds roll out and are automatically installed, they do indeed mess with WMC if you have shoe-horned it into Windows 10 via this method.
 
Wow I'm frankly shocked at the negativity surrounding the latest and greatest FREE OS upgrade. One that enables dx12. Guys n gals, chances are you really don't have great maintenance on your pcs if you had any trouble with the upgrade cos even here in South Africa it was trouble-free for me and I'm not even on the latest and greatest hardware. If you don't want it then don't install it. It's not a difficult decision.
 
It's better than 7 or 8 , no reason not to upgrade.

Just that a number of MFR's are still working to get compatibility established since w10 has acted more like a Beta and the Beta was more like an Alpha. I am on my 3rd try to get a stable W10 and each time reverted back to 7 due to stability of windows programs and services and hardware compatibility issues. If this doesn't pan out over this 2 weeks of testing when I have time to deal with the headaches, then I'll Will attempt one more time right before the cut off but if hardware isn't supported or stability is still an issue I'll stay with W7. I sent the better part of 2 months getting from XP to windows 7 due to the same thing. I'm in no rush to switch and deal with that until I have a lul in my regular tasks Mid May. However, M$ did this so they can get software - hardware mfr's to update programs and drivers. Also for the normal drone user who doesn't understand the data mining that is going on behind the scenes in W10 with Cortana, edge, etc as well as the vulnerabilities that were & are waiting to be exploited. . which I believe some of them did or started to until they realized the beta was more of an alpha. With the latest build that was just released over the weekend it seems a bit better and I've been getting notifications last week about updates to W10. Just waiting for 2 mfr's to confirm compatibility and I should be good. (hopefully) At least W10 isn't like W8 (at least the majority of it isn't)
 
Forgot that at some point it will also stop updating, and every update will fail. then you have to go back to your prior version. Whatever you do make an image right before and right after the upgrade so you can easily go back to w7 or if you have to w10 when it was still updating.
 
Looks like when Windows 7 support ends, I'll be moving to Linux Mint and Steam O/S on my PC's. I'm just so tired of the sleazy, arrogant, bullying business practices...Unfortunately, I'll have to stick with Windows for my laptop just to log onto my work VPN.
 
Nice to hear about further support for Linux, but it's going to take millions of you to even make a single percentage point of difference in regards to market share difference between the install base of Windows 10 and Linux.

When Windows 7 support ends, Windows 10 will likely not even be much of an option.
 


If you're a gamer, or if you don't want to spend hours fixing things every few months Linux isn't a great option. I've used it a lot and it's just as much of a hobby as it is an OS. It's a lot of fun to tinker with, but if you don't like to do that you're screwed.
