Question Microsoft Office Activation - how does it verify your computer? IP Address? Hardware?

Hi everyone, newbie question for you.

what does Microsoft Office use to activate? Meaning, does it check IP Address, or certain parts of your computer? If it uses IP address, how can you go from home (one IP address) to a friends house (2nd IP address), or the library (a 3rd IP address) and use it?

this would be in regards to an older version of microsoft office... 2010. so no microsoft account.
