Microsoft Still Going After Royalties For Android

That's exactly what MS needs to do to lose 33% of it's customers!

That way no company will choose MS anymore as partner, and push Linux ONLY on all devices; and MS would sell only OEM versions if they continue to push like this!

ROTFL Bill I know that your not in charge any more but you seriously might want to check your legal team. Are they writing for SNL now because this is good material! OEM that's what needs to happen if they (windows) wants to live!

No bt Microsoft owns Acive Sync that connects to its Exchange servers that many companies uses. I assume this is the email part that MS is going after.
Apple has to pay for this feature to use as well, as its not their technology and they didnt invent it.

As soon as Valve releases a Linux version I'm switching to Ubuntu. I mean, Linux now supports DX10 and 11 natively! Hardcore gaming on Linux is almost a dream come true!

[citation][nom]FinlayG[/nom]You have got to be kidding me. Micro$oft owns e-mail? This is just petty.[/citation]

It owns patents related to email. They don't own email.

Acer, Asus and others need to grow a backbone and tell Microshaft exactly where to get off. M$ doesn't have a patent on email. Email existed before Microsoft knew what a networked computer was. It's all scare tactics because M$ also doesn't own any patents on Linux. Linux is distributed under the GNU public license, and M$ has no claims to any of it. The question of Linux has already been settled when the M$ backed SCO lost it's lawsuit against Linux. If M$ tells you or anyone to pay up over any Linux based (ie Android, Chrome, etc) software, don't be fooled, just tell them exactly where to go (very hot place) and how to get there (kiss my what?).

$10 to $15 seems high for licensing for the likes of Active Sync. Seems like MS's leverage is that they can screw these vendors on licensing for Win for their other laptops.

MS=Strong arm bullies....It has not change...and the Justice Dept just watches....

The reason they are effective with their threats..is their deep pockets....which they got deep by using unfair trade practices...Not news..this is the MS legacy..cheaters and bullies....The corruption here...is representative of the corruption in America.....MS had paid all of the right people....The key to beating MS down, is to build the Cloud...and build neutrality into it...

Those who can't compete - sue.

There have been several flowcharts drawn to show the current cell-phone patent suit mess between companies and NPEs. It's a really snarled-up mess but don't worry - the lawyers will still be paid and the end-users will be covering the costs.

patent laws seem to be inhibitant of technology after protecting it for so many years. I guess every law will be taken advantage of after existing for so long.

Good lord, this is gonna get messy. Overall, I like MS products, like Windows 7, Xbox 360, and such, but I really hate their business tactics. Eventually, these bullying kind of tactics are gonna come back and bite them in the ass one day...

This is the reason why windows still has the desktop market share (it has nothing to do with the quality of their products)

...Marcus, you know exactly how to report something in such a way to mislead people--without appearing to purposely mislead them. I have nothing against Android phones (in fact I recommend them and am seriously considering one), but what Google is doing here is wrong.

The royalties MS is after are related to ActiveSync (designed to synchronize email directly with Microsoft Exchange servers), something Google hasn't paid for since they originally used it on the first Android based phones. While there are many, many cases of patent trolls or stupid patent-related lawsuits, this is definitely not one of them. Why Google expects to be able to use MS technology without paying for it is beyond my comprehension.

No. Look up Ray Tomlinson first email.

Although M$ is *probably* after something related to ActiveSync and/or a kind of Exchange connector.

The reality is this is logical and even justified.

Think about it from this perspective. Google is making Android. Google charges $0 for the use of Android. Google profits from the ad-generated revenue from users of Android. Google $0 sale price makes it difficult for any third party like MSFT to sue for profit infringement because awards are typically awarded based on revenue. With zero revenue directly attributable to the sale of the Android platform, it is very difficult to sue for other areas of Google.

As a result, Google has very little incentive to care much about the copyright infringements. They can do as they like without too much repercussion since they recognize that lawsuits will not come too easily with a zero dollar revenue model from Android.

The manufacturers of phones are sheep. They take whatever they perceive as free. I highly doubt they ran a risk analysis of the operating system's risk to future lawsuits until the lawsuits occur because they had felt immune due to Google. It is just the way businesses are run.

These lawsuits simply make MSFT look bad but I think it is justifiable in this context.
