I am upgrading my mom with a "newer" Dell XPS 8700 desktop computer. Her current Desktop is a Dell Inspiron 3847 is 10 year old, and runs a bit slow.

The Dell XPS 8700 runs Windows 10, and has two user profiles on it (one for mom already). So I moved over all Documents, pictures, videos, Appdata etc. to the newer computer.

The problem is, for some reason, I can't get the Microsoft Voice Recorder to play. She uses it frequently, and likes it. Voice Recorder works just fine on the other user profile on the Dell XPS, but with her profile it doesn't. I have to think something in her appdata is corrupted.

I ran sfc /scannow, and it found no issues.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled more than once. No luck.

on the profile where it is not working, I show the following error on the event viewer (Photo 1)

the voice recorder will open, but it looks weird. When it first opens it looks like Photo 2. Eventually it looks like Photo 3. but then just sits there and it doesn't populate the previous sound recordings. If I click on that blue record button the program crashes.

Yes, there are other sound recorders out there, but it's the principle of the thing lol. Probably something I copied in the appdata from the older computer to the newer one is screwing things up.

I would agree. If you copied the whole AppData folder over, you will likely have issues. Especially if it's from another system.

It's listed as "Windows Sound Recorder" in the store, but shows up as "Voice Recorder" once installed.

I believe there is a "Repair" option in Settings for most of those Windows Store apps. Go to Settings / Apps / Apps & Features and click on it. See if there is an Advanced Options and if so, go in there and try Reset for the app.

Also, in Settings / Privacy / Microphone, does the app have access to the Microphone?

If I click on that blue record button the program crashes.
Possibly a driver issue too. See if there are any updates for the Audio drivers (and any other driver updates you can find on Dell). https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-3847-desktop/overview

You may have to start over with a new Windows account and not copy the AppData folder over, or at least, not copy ALL of it. You might have to pick and choose which files to copy.

Thanks for the quick reply. There is no repair option, but I forgot to mention that I did try the "reset' option for the voice recorder, under settings, apps, advanced options.

No good.

I saved a copy of the entire appdata folder on the Dell XPS 8700 computer before I moved the newer data onto it., figuring something like this might happen. So I may have to return some data here/ and there. Piecemeal. see if that works.

I got all the settings just right. I don't want to have to start over from scratch just for a stupid voice recorder program lol. but it's frustrating. It's a tiny little splinter but I want to remove it. obsessive!

I'll check for updated drivers tomorrow. getting late.

You may want to have a look at this folder:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsSoundRecorder_8wekyb3d8bbwe

Copy/paste to Run dialog if needed. Back it up before changing anything.
