Microsoft word strange font behavior

Hello, for work I am to update an old bylaw act. In the past when it was updated they would simply print off an update then place the sheet in the back and leave a note to the correction when the reader would come to where the correction would be. however I was assigned to make the first digital copy. the original document was scanned to a pdf then run through an ocr (which one i do not know) then converted to a .doc. My task is to go to all the places that would have the corrections and change the text to the correction.
However, anytime i go to add my own text the font is very strange, it is extremely small, thin and narrow (looks almost like the messages when you were a kid that you had to read from and extreme angle, like from the bottom of the page to be able to read it) and is completely ilegable, word says the font is the same when it obviously isn't. Anyone have any ideas as for what could be the cause of this?

copy/paste the text into notepad. close word, open a new word document and copy/paste from notepad into word. this will get rid of all weird formatting.
