Hi guys, I'm putting together a fairly quiet mid-range gaming PC and I'd like your advice on my build. I've already done quite a bit of research, but it would be good to get some experienced eyes looking over it.

I've had a Dell desktop since 2005/6 which has served me well, but is now failing to start up, hence the new PC. My usage will be:
  • Gaming - initially older games like Fallout 3 that I have yet to play, but would also like to be able to try some more recent titles like Witcher 3, Subnautica.
  • Programming - I will do a bit of web development, and may try games development.
  • General use - browsing, word processing etc.
I'd like to minimise initial costs and have some room to upgrade later, should I feel like it, so I'm reusing a couple of old parts, see below. Here is my build:

---
  • CPU: Intel i5-9400F
    • I know many would recommend the Ryzen 5 2600 over this. However, I've read that Intel can do a little better in gaming, and I read in one review that some older games trip on AMD chips, and I'd rather be safe than sorry. In addition, I don't think I'd have much use for the extra threads for the most part, and don't plan on overclocking.
  • CPU Cooler: Intel Stock Cooler
    • Given that this is a fairly low spec build, I'll start with the stock cooler. If it does get too noisy I'll upgrade to a be quiet! Pure Rock.
  • Motherboard: MSI B360 Gaming Plus
  • RAM: Crucial 2 x 8GB DDR4-2666
  • GPU: REUSING Sapphire Radeon HD 4770 512MB GDDR5
    • I know this will be a major bottleneck, but it'll do for now for older games. I'll be using Windows 7 64-bit initially (may have to mess around to get it working on this modern system). Eventually I will probably upgrade to something like Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8GB.
  • Storage: WD Blue 2.5" SATA SSD 500GB + REUSING WD Blue 640GB HDD
  • Optical Drive: ASUS DRW 24D5MT DVD drive
  • Case: GameMax Silent Case
    • Not that well known, but superb reviews on Amazon and only £50. Similar to Fractal R5.
  • Case Fans: 1 x 120mm rear exhaust (included with case) + 1 x be quiet! Silent Wings 3 140mm PWM front intake
    • I'll probably add another SW3 in the front when I get the new GPU.
  • PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 11 500W CM
---

So, what do you think? Once I upgrade to Windows 10 I'll need to add a wireless adapter, I'm thinking ASUS PCE-AC55BT B1. And if the onboard sound isn't good enough, I'll get the SoundBlaster Audigy Fx. In the future I can add an M-type NVMe if I need the extra speed.

Thanks,
Will

Update:
Having done some research, it looks like I won't get Windows 7 running on this, so I'll have to upgrade to 10, meaning new GPU is now a must (and probably another intake fan with it), and the wireless PCIe card is also.

Any thoughts? Holding until Prime Day for purchasing just in case there are any deals.

Thanks,
Will

Update:

It now looks like I can get my HD 4770 working on Windows 10. If not, I can get a cheap used card for about £50, so I'm going back to my original plan of not getting the RX 580 initially.

I still want a PSU that will handle it in the future though. Is 500W gonna be enough, or should I step up to 600? PSU calculators estimate that with the RX 580 m power draw will be 430W, so I think 500W should be fine.

I'm also now choosing a new monitor, and the Dell SE2416H and Dell SE2417HG both look good. Any thoughts?
