It has been years since I posted here and the last time, you guys were a big help. Now, I need suggestions for a GPU upgrade.

I'm planning to upgrade my GPU. Any suggestions on which ones I should look into? Nothing too expensive or crazy. A mid-range one would be fine. I'm currently looking into the RTX 306 TI and the RTX 4060. Thanks!

Specs:

Processor: i5 7600 LGA1151

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Gaming B8 CF

RAM: 16 GB

GPU: GTX 1650

PSU: Corsair TX750M

Hey there,

So, sadly upgrading your CPU won't bring you the kind of bump you think. Your CPU is quite dated now, and is not powerful enough to feed one of the GPU's you mention fast enough. In addition, the CPU is weak for modern AAA gaming. 4c/4t just doesn't cut it any more. You will be experiencing all sorts of stuttering once your CPU hits 100% usage. You are probably already experiencing that.

Anyone advising to upgrade the GPU, is not paying attention.

TBH, you need a base level upgrade first. So, CPU, mobo, ram.

what ram make/model do you have?

I'd recommend this to start with:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor ($156.32 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Deepcool AK400 66.47 CFM CPU Cooler ($31.98 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($159.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $348.29
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

And then save for a bit and get this:

PCPartPicker Part List

Video Card: XFX Speedster SWFT 319 Radeon RX 6800 16 GB Video Card ($389.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $389.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This will turn your PC into a nice gaming rig that will do really well up to 1440p res.

How adventurous are you?

Z690 at the lowest price possible, still uses DDR4. Been tempted to pick one up myself just to have a spare.

i3-12100F, cheapest LGA1700 CPU worth having. Basically equivalent to an i7-7700k, and intended to be temporary. This gives you access all the way up to the i7/i9 12th, 13th, and 14th generation chips. So a year or two from now, pick up a 13th gen i7 on the cheap? Or for a little more now, pick up a 12th gen i7 today (12700KF is $215)

A580 is the cheapest fully featured GPU on the market. It doesn't work in all games and the drivers can be iffy. The total of all these parts is about the price of an RTX4060.

Also the slightly faster A750 to look at. RX6600 still the best all around entry level GPU.

CPU: Intel Core i3-12100F 3.3 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($99.65 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock Z690 Phantom Gaming 4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: ASRock Challenger OC Arc A580 8 GB Video Card ($169.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $369.63

Wow! I'll just save up and get a new system. I'll be saving these specs. BTW, what's the Intel equivalent to that AMD processor? And can you also recommend the RAM and PSU? Might as well since you already suggested everything for a new rig. 😛

I was thinking the 12400. More host processing. Potential 100% usage with 4c/8t. Good alternative build.

For a little more you may get the 13400. It would give pretty close to the performance of the 12600k I think, but I think ships with a stock cooler. Just be sure your board has bios flashback in case the board doesn’t have an updated bios out of the box.

Recently got an msi z690 ddr4 board from my local microcenter for about 100 bucks and an i5 12600kf from Amazon for $140. Those work pretty well together for the $$ imo.

There's no question that I'd choose the RTX 4060. The RTX 3060 Ti is only 8% faster, is a generation older and doesn't seem to be available new from mainstream vendors anymore which means that it's $157 more expensive than the RTX 4060.
Specs:

Processor: i5 7600 LGA1151
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Gaming B8 CF
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: GTX 1650
PSU: Corsair TX750M
This looks like a gaming PC to me because a productivity PC would have at least an i7. If I'm right and it's a gaming PC, then you shouldn't get either of those cards. Here's why:
The RX 6700 XT costs the same as the RTX 4060, is 12% faster and has 12GB of VRAM instead of only 8GB (it's also 4% faster than the RTX 3060 Ti). If you're only gaming, there's no question that this is what you should get. After all, at this performance level, ray-tracing is worse than useless and the RX 6700 XT's 12GB of VRAM make it a far more capable card than the RTX 4060 (or 3060 Ti for that matter) at 1440p. That's a palpable improvement over what the RTX 4060 (or RTX 3060 Ti) can offer.

Now, if you're performing tasks than benefit from CUDA, then the RTX 4060 is the card for you but for gaming, there's no question that the RX 6700 XT is the better buy.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Time to save up and hopefully get a new rig within the year. 😛
Well, if it's going to be that long, nothing that anyone has said in this thread will be relevant by then because things change all the time. Wait until you're about ready to do it and then ask because at least then, the answers will be correct when you go to buy. As it is now, anything that was recommended could be completely wrong even three months from now.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't have asked, I'm just saying that you should check in again when you're ready just to make sure that everything is still correct. 😉👍
