Midrange Gaming System Build

Apr 30, 2008
I am choosing parts for a friend's gaming computer, I just want to make sure there aren't any red flags with this build.

I'm ordering all the parts off newegg and waiting for my friend to pick a case he likes. I went with the cheapest quad core I could find and added a decent cooler since it will probably be overclocked. The OS will probably be Vista x64 however my friend will handle that on his own. The budget is about $800 but obviously lower is better. So I guess my questions are, should I change anything for a cheaper part? Is there something blatantly wrong / even mildly wrong with the hardware I've chosen? and are there any other recommendations you would like to add?

EDIT: I should have added, he's not into gaming at the "runs crysis at 60fps constant" level. Source based games, newer games playable at medium settings (FPS and RTS mostly)
Even an AMD X4 955 build can easily fit in that budget...

X4 955 + ASUS M4A78T-E AM3

Crucial Tracer

HDD - WD Black 640GB

Graphics card - 4870 1GB - As good as the GTX 260...
($139.99 after $20.00 Mail-In

LITE-ON Black 22X - Retail

PSU - Same

CPU cooler -
Sunbeam CR-CCTF92-4 92mm Core-Contact Freezer CPU Cooler W/TX-2

Total - $737 | $687 with rebates...

And give me 1 good reason to choose you intel build over this one...(Except being loyal to intel)

well if he really wants a cheap quad core, you could get him an Phenom II X2 550 and unlock the other two cores...lol...

But if you really want to stick with intel, I would definitely OC that quad core
