MiFi- How does it work?

My daughter was just telling me about MiFi but she's not sure how it works. Can we buy a "MiFi device" and use it at home for phones, laptops and streaming devices instead of paying monthly for WiFi? Is there a monthly service you have to pay for to have MiFi? Sorry if these are dumb questions but it just sounds too good to be true!! If I didn't have to pay for WiFi monthly, it would be a dream come true!! lol
Someone please tell me this is as awesome as we think it is! : )
BTW, I love this site! This is the first place I go to ask all of my dumb questions! ; )

MiFi uses cellular service to connect to the internet. Usually it will be more expensive and more limited in bandwidth than traditional internet service.

So, more expensive as in more data charges through my mobile provider? Are all providers compatible? I have Boost Mobile which, I believe, is a Sprint company.
