Hi all,

Last year I got a Dell 5450, not happy about speed I then installed a Samsung SSD and then migrate everything from HDD to SSD using Samsung Migration tool. If my memory is good I had to enter Windows or Microsoft office key that I had copy using a utility.

Now I'm planning to give back the laptop so I need to migrate back the content of SSD, Disk 0, OS Partition to Disk 1, OS Partition without affecting other partitions on Disk 1. The BIOS was and is still set to SCSI (I know) due to Intel Rapid Start because I didn't had the password last year.

It seems I can't use Partition tools like EaseUS or MiniTool Partition Wizard.

How could I migrate updated OS, programs & date from SSD to HDD?

Solution

Yup, I figured as much, but I'm afraid that they will most probably be lost during the migration/cloning process, due to the destination drive being reformatted and overwritten, as already mentioned.
However, I guess that if you're returning the laptop to the vendor you are at least expected to have made some modifications software wise and I think you...

Well, you can't fit two ~450 partitions onto a single 500Gb drive. I see you've got a 2Tb My Passport connected there, so why not start by just backing up all the data on the HDD to the external drive. Then you can just image the SSD to the HDD using any program you want that does drive imaging and copy the other HDD files back afterward.

Hey there, PhiHier.

Basically the process should be the same. However I don't think you'll have a say in "not affecting the partitions". The destination drive is always reformatted and overwritten with the information of the source drive (be it a single partition or the whole HDD).
Why can't you use the above mentioned cloning tools?

This is a tutorial on how to migrate to a new hard drive, so it might be useful in your case: http://lifehacker.com/5517688/how-to-upgrade-your-tiny-hard-drive-to-a-spacious-new-one-and-keep-your-data-intact. Give it a look and let me know if it helps.

Not Affecting other partitions I mean Keep intact the Disk 1: 39MB (OEM Partition) and the 11.73GB (Active, Recovery Partition).

*Also I forgot to mention I have 2 USB to SATA cable/adaptor available. Laptop is not equipped with CD/DVD device.

If I boot Clonezilla Live CD from a USB Drive then Clone/Image the SDD to the HDD, will I destroy the 39 MB & 11.73GB partitions?

Hi JaredDM

I did backup both drives to my passport using EaseUS Todo Backup not sure if it the good way to do it in case I need to restore in case it doesn't work.

However, I guess that if you're returning the laptop to the vendor you are at least expected to have made some modifications software wise and I think you should have no problems returning it because of that. However, you'll need to confirm that with the vendor/manufacturer's customer support.

Please keep me posted.
