Migrating from hdd to ssd

Im thinking of getting a samsung ssd but i have alot of stuff on my old hard drive... I ws thinking i could disconnect the hdd and install windows fresh on the ssd and set it as the boot drive. Then just attach the hdd again and set it as a storage drive and delete all the windows folders. Would this method work?
