Hey guys,

I'm planning to get a new ssd for my laptop since its cache drive recently broke down.
I have a 1 TB HDD now and want to get a 250GB ssd now that there is a msata slot sitting there.

I want to migrate the OS (windows 10) and the applications (office, Photoshop, premier pro, etc...) to the SSD and leave all the videos/ photos on the HDD.

Is there a chance that I can only clone the OS and applications I want to the SSD? If it doesn't fit, can I choose which applications to clone and reinstall the rest of them onto the HDD later? Because I don't have a spare external HDD sitting around now (Overseas at the moment, I got a couple ext. HDDs back home)

Thanks guys

You can't pick and choose between applications. All or nothing.

If you get a Samsung drive, the most recent version of Samsung Data Migration allows you to leave off those types of files in your Libraries...video/photo/music.

How much used space is currently on your HDD?
How much used space, if you disregard video/photo/music?

Just did a quick check total size is 918 GB with 25GB free now.

Approx all photo/ video/ google drive/ song size is 720GB that leaves 173GB that is applications and OS.

I'm planing to get the Samsung EVO Msata 250GB [edit: EVO 850] (after formatting I'm hoping that there is at least 230GB usable).
Does that come with the software needed?

You can download the software from Samsung. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/support/downloads.html
With 173GB used space to migrate, that will work.

With a 250GB drive, the Samsung application requires it to be below 200GB. So you're good there.

Thanks for the reply!
One more thing,

Say I'm using photoshop on the SSD. Does the location of the PSD file impact on the loading time? Would I have to save all documents or saves on the SSD to benefit the full speed?

A PSD that lives on the SSD will open faster than a PSD that lives on the HDD.
But...with limited space, you may not have a choice.

Possibly have a folder on the SSD for working files. Once finished, then move it off to the HDD.

thanks for the reply.

One more thing, since I realized my cache drive that came with the laptop was unrecognised after upgraded to win 10 (listed as unknown device)(there is an option to remove this unknown device safely as if its an usb), the computer bsod when ever it wake up from sleep.

So I removed it.

does this sound like a faulty ssd or a faulty msata slot. I'll ask the shop if they have a spare mstat ssd lying around but I very much doubt it. Hate to waste money on a ssd if i have a faulty msata

thanks

I got the ssd today, but the migration software isn't working. It detects the disks and everything but when it goes to start cloning, it is stuck at 0 percent as well as 0mb/s. It also took a good 10 min to analyse the source disk before it starts to clone.

any ideas? I might have to do a fresh install if all fails. My win 10 is upgraded from oem win 8.1, is there a way for me to use the same windows?
thanks

What software are you using?

Im using the samsung migration software. I dled it from the samsung website

When the migration software is running, at some point the ssd goes offline. I use disk part list disk and can see that the status is offline. If I make it online, it acts as if it as never been plugged into the computer and asks for volume letter and to format it.

Thanks USARet for all your help!

Did a clean install on my ssd and installing all apps now. Time consuming but it worked!

One problem is that, now that the HDD is my secondary hard disk, I can't delete anything from it, it says I need permission from system. I tried google but couldn't find much on it.

It should not do this.
Are you sure you are booting from the SSD? If you disconnect the HDD, does the system boot properly?

Yep, the SSD is working fine.

From a bit of google-ing, I suspect the issue is the ownership of the old HDD. I can delete the application folders and stuff but when I try to access my old media files (movies/ musics located on the old desktop) (i.e. D drive > User > Lenovo) I can't open the lenovo folder.

"Take Ownership" of those locations

the take ownership seems to be quite a lengthy process. I can finally access my old desltop files but deleting the old windows seem to be a pain.

I will probably wait until I can get back to my external hdds and then format the internal one.

Thanks USAFRet for all your help!
