Hi guys.

I want to migrate my OS from HDD to SSD. Can this be done by restoring the computer and then choosing another drive as destination for the fresh install or will it simply be installed on the same drive as it is restoring from?

Solution

No, don't do that Restore thing.

So...you want to move from an HDD to a new SSD. Let's investigate a bit:
What size is the new SSD?
How much total used space is on the current C partition?
How old is this install?
What OS is it?

It does matter.
So....to clone from the old drive to the new 250GB SSD, your total used space must be below 200GB or so.
You can't do just part of it.

Or a clean install.

250gb
too much (but that doesnt matter since i dont need the files from the c partition on the new ssd)
I just upgraded from a verified win 7 to win 10 home

Ahh i see. I will just download the MediaCreation tool and run it from the SSD and then delete everything on the C drive. Will this however also remove the windows installation on the C drive?

Your initial question" I want to migrate my OS from HDD to SSD." talks to a different way forward.
Clone or clean install??
(the MediaCreation tool has nothing to do with a cloning operation Which do you want to do?)

I just want to install windows on my new SSD and then wipe the HDD. Since cloning was not an option since I cannot only choose the OS, then I'll be doing a fresh install on the SSD

Do you have a valid license key and the relevant install media?

I downloaded the Media Creation tool which is windows 10's version of a Windows install ISO file. I have then put the tool file on my SSD and have started running the installer.

I already have an activated version of Win 10 on my HDD, but I don't know if it is activated with the same Verification key as the windows 7 I upgraded from?

The activation of Windows 10 is significantly different than before.
If you Upgraded from a valid, qualifying OS, and it says the Win 10 is activated, then you're good to go.

Solution

Awesome. It is activated and I'll just be installing now.

Thank you for your time :)
