I recently got a Win2k adv. server and didn't want to have
to enter all the usernames and rights into active
directory if I could get around that. I promoted my NT
4.0 BDC to PDC (with the PDC offline) and then upgraded it
to win2k thinking that it would then replicate the active
directory to the new server. However, the new server is
the root domain and in setting up AD on the upgrade, I'm
creating a child domain that is the same as the old NT
domain. The upgrade box gets an error message that the
new (root) domain doesn't exist. When I use Net Neighbor,
it shows up as it does when I browse for the parent domain
in the AD setup. Any ideas what I can do now?

It seems you now have 2 domains.

Is that what you were after when you started this? An empty root domain with
your users in the child domain or did you want just one domain with your
users in it?

What do you want the final AD set up to look like?
