Hi,

I currently have a laptop with a 1TB HDD. I'm considering buying a 250/500gb SSD along with it ( my laptop has room for 4 drives ).

Would it be possible to install windows on the SSD, while keeping all of my information on my hdd, without using an external drive or other tool to back up the data? Windows is currently installed on the same partition as all my other data.

just take out your hard drive and new install to the SSD. You can still get data from the hard drive after. Not sure if having 2 bootable disks will cause issues....shouldn't. or you can just get a new mechanical drive for your system and keep the other as external data and grab it when you need it.

Thanks for the answers. You reckon if I have 2 bootable drives, I could still have acces to all the files on 1 of them while booting windows from the other? That way I could just uninstall windows and not lose anything it seems.

Is it possible to install windows to my SSD before removing it from my HDD from an OEM disk though? Considering you're only allowed to use it on 1 computer.

I'd rather not buy an external drive or something like that, since I would have to buy it purely for this procedure.

Usually you install windows new from a USB flash drive; if you have the disks then that works too; just take out your existing hard drive and install new from media to the SSD.

your hard drive turns into a secondary data drive; just don't hook it up till after the SSD is installed first. You will beable to access the data. i only mention getting a new drive if you don't want to hassle with having 2 bootable drives on the same system causing problems possibly. but it may not.
