Wanting to set up a dedicated server to play modded minecraft on with 3 friends and my brother. We usually play with 100-300 mods and I would like to have it ran separately from my own computer. Would not like to go over 200 dollars and i'm located in Canada. The build i currently have is located here: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/dFVNzM please give me your thoughts, ideas and recommend builds. Thanks in advance!

minecraft server hosting is around everywhere, with budget of 50+/month, you can get pretty decent stuff.
first things in google after searching for "minecraft server hosting"
https://mcprohosting.com Only one i've had personal experience with, it works as far as I saw.
https://bisecthosting.com
https://ggservers.com

Rest I will not list for now, since search result claims "free server hosting" and there is no free cake on internet, especially GOOD cake, that your planned mod amounts would require.

For mod setup/config, you might want to test run it on your own computer first though but... up to you.

edit: If you want to build your own server, go for it... if you get the server as jar, you can run it on linux which is free.
Only problem with minecraft is, it's pretty much single core only so... better CPU might be necessary for that amount of mods.

Thanks for the quick reply! Though I'm not looking to rent as server as over time it will cost alot more than it would to just build one. I've gotten a server already setup but whens its running i cant really do anything else other than minecraft. So i'm wanting to build a separate computer to run it. Thanks for reminding me about Linux, i was looking for my old windows discs and couldn't find them and this would be a way better solution to buying an OS.

Realize that having a Minecraft server ran from your own house will be hard on your internet and involves portforwarding and such.

Depening if your using a mod pack or just playing with some mods you may need more than 8 gigs. If your using something from the Technic launcher which is a wellknown one that makes it's own server files/pack then you should be fine with giving it about 8 gigs but you'll need some more than that for your computer so you can give it the full 8. However if you're putting the mods in yourself and running it off of a Forge server than I would suggest having 12-16 gigs into the server for you guys to play with.

The people i will be playing with live on the same block several houses away, so i do not think the connection will be too big of a problem (we use tunngle/hamachi). The mod pack i will be using is just ran on a forge server that is heavily modded to have good/decent performance. The mod pack contains some pretty resource consuming mods which i should have taken into consideration and added a bit more ram. (mod pack has 100-200 mods in it)

So the question is if i added another 4g or 8g's of ram will this build work for running the server?
