Hi, I recently got a new graphics card: Sapphire 7870 1GHz 2GB Dual-X.
Its a pretty damn good performance boost in most of my games compared to my old GTX 560 ti but in Minecraft I have a problem with my GPU usage (only around 30-40%) which results in low frames.
My old card reached well over 100 - 200FPS easily but this new card for some reason doesn't, it only gets around 60-100 Vanilla and 30-60 Modded. I've tried using Optifine but to no success.
I need some help in getting my card to actually do something when running Minecraft, any help appreciated.

System Specs
MOBO - MSI P67a-GD53
CPU - i5 2500k @ 4.2GHz
RAM - GSkill Ripjaws 8GB DDR3
GPU - Sapphire 7870 2GB

Minecraft doesn't like nvidia cards that much, I remember I read somewhere that java always uses intergrated graphics in some cases and you can force it to run on the graphics card, im not sure though.

Possibly but I'm using the exact same setup as when I had my 560 ti in which maintained FPS of over 150. The problem is that my 7870 only reaches around 30% GPU usage in the game. By the way my CPU usage hovers around the 40-50% mark so it can't be a bottleneck.

My PC specs are almost identical to yours but I'm not having any issues. When you play are you rendering any videos or running and benchmarking programs and do you have a lot of junk and viruses on your computer. These are all things that can make your computer slow even if you have the "best computer" in the world. Also check if you have vsync on in the options if you do, turn it off but since you have such a good videocard the game might start to tear.

I don't run any programs other than Minecraft when I'm playing, have you checked your GPU usage and FPS ktaur?
When you say yours are almost identical, how identical is that?

I really don't understand this issue I am having and would love if someone knows how to solve it :(

I have read a few articles on problems similar to this before because i plan on getting a 7870 and some of them have been resolved by changing your settings from balanced to max fps.

your probably running integrated graphics ive got intel hd 4600 and it runs minecraft at about 60-80 frames, and I have a weaker gpu gtx765m and whe4n I run it with it I get 260- 320 fps. since you installed 64bit java it allows you to allocate more ram to mc so intel hd got faster.

I have the exact same card, the Sapphire HD 7870 GHZ edition with dual X cooling unit and I am having this same problem too. Its like choppy like i lose a frame every second. Very irritating how i can run Crysis 3 maxed and Bf4 maxed at at least 40 fps smoothly but i even lowered minecraft to its lowest settings and even tried overclocking my gpu by a little more, tried updating my java, tried updating my gpu driver, still i lose a frame every second which gives it that "lagging" feeling. I guess the game just doesnt cooperate with this type of gpu.
BTW im running an FX 8350 CPU and Corsair Vengance 8GB DDR3 ram so no bottleneck.
And my motherboard has no integrated graphics.
