Minecraft lags after upgrading graphics card.

So I upgraded my GPU 2 days ago from a Radeon HD 5770, to a GeForce GTX 970. Minecraft ran well on the first day, but since yesterday, I've noticed some issues with Minecraft.

For some reason, Minecraft would start off running okay (56-60 FPS) but then slowly starts to lag and become unplayable maybe after 5-10 minutes with major stuttering (going down to 4 FPS).

Before the lag issue started though, Minecraft would simply crash specifying it was caused by OpenGL or something like that and would open the NVIDIA support page which doesn't really show anything related to this. But after a reboot, this stopped showing and the lag issue started.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing Java and the NVIDIA driver, but the issue still persists. So now I'm really unsure of what to do now.

Bear in mind, this issue only happens on Minecraft. Every other game (including the latest games with everything maxed out), can run just fine.

My computer specs:
MOBO: Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H
HDD: 1 TB
CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K
RAM: 8 GB DDR3
GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0
PSU: Corsair CX600
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro x64

Solution
HWInfo shows some different results -

The CPU is running at 28%usage. The GPU at 34%. So both nearly at idle.

The CPU is at 51-61C which is too high for idle.

The GPU fan is only at 381rpm which I think is OK with 970s. Its at 64C per Open Hardware Monitor.

Your power supply voltages seem fine.

Your motherboard - http://www.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4481#ov - includes uefi software "GIGABYTE EasyTune"

Can you install and run it?

Get CPU temps for idle and gaming. It should be more accurate than Open Hardware Monitor or HWInfo.

And can you get the 970 clocks and temps from Afterburner for idle and gaming.

Post the results to see if they're the same as above.
Sounds like your PC is heating up and slowing things down. What CPU and GPU temps are you getting at idle and while gaming?

Have you OC'd your CPU or GPU?

Download HWInfo and run Sensors. Post the results - usually 3 screenshots in TinyPic or similar. To see how your hardware is running.

I'm using the latest version of Java (fresh from their website). CPU usage is also pretty normal (roughly 40%) when I run Minecraft and with my web browser opened.

That's what I was thinking too. But then checking the temperatures with Open Hardware Monitor:
Idle:
CPU: 35 degrees. GPU: 40 degrees

Running Minecraft:
CPU: 50 degrees GPU: 65 degrees

And nope, never OC'd. I'll download HWinfo now.

Actually, that screenshot was taken when I had Minecraft opened. So the CPU running at 51-61 degrees would be pretty normal I think if it's running. But I'll download that now.

Where can I get Afterburner? Is it the MSI one?

Okay, I've got both now. But I have no idea where to find info for the temps and clocks.

That's a bit of relief. I'm not exactly sure how to check for the CPU with UEFI?

I've found a temporary fix, which is to lower the render distance to below 20 chunks, and it would stay at a constant 60 FPS.

Your mobo - http://www.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4481#ov - comes with a disk containing
"GIGABYTE EasyTune
GIGABYTE EasyTune
• Simple and easy-to-use interface that allows users to fine-tune their system settings
• Adjust system and memory clocks and voltages in a Windows environment
• System-related information display without the need to install additional software"

Install it and use it.

I've installed it, but doesn't really show the the temp info, other than overclocking.

Try -
GIGABYTE UEFI DualBIOS™
• Take control of how your BIOS looks and feels with a fully customizable UI
• Adjust overclocking and performance settings in real-time
• Smooth mouse control and shortcuts for fast navigation
GIGABYTE's new Dashboard mode allows users to have complete access to all data related to your motherboards key components including CPU, graphics and memory clocks, temperatures and voltages.
For the first time ever, overclockers can adjust CPU clock, frequency and voltage settings in real-time within BIOS. This massively saves time, allowing users to find optimal settings without having to reboot.

Hmm, I'll have a look at it later, when I get on my computer.

This is strange, there is no link to download it. Is this really just referring to the actual BIOS itself meaning I can only see my idle temps (since I don't load it on Windows)?

Checked in the Utility page and it's not present. I've even tried to Google it.
