Just a quick question, i am planning to start an own Big Minecraft server, i think it wil run on my hp proliant ml 350 g5 server, 2x quadcore Xeon 2.86 ghz, 11gb ecc ddr3 ram

Now, my question is, i have a wd Red 1tb in there as backup drive for Photos, videos... but i don't think it wil Be enough for a Big Minecraft server, Will a 10 or 15k rpm sas drive Be good enough for that? Or do i need some ssd to fit in there?

Solution

Well those are probably used and as an owner of high rpm harddrives the failure rate, power draw and low performance compared to ssd's aren't worth. I didi however say that you should be fine with just a normal ssd until you reach 100 + people that are on the server at the same time.

I've run 60 people mc servers from a usb stick before so it shouldn't be a problem. If you are really noticing intensive disk usage then I would recommend a cheap ssd. High rpm hard drives have become useless since ssd's became mainstream.
