Mini HDMI to HDMI/ HDMI to VGA Won't work why?

I have an NVIDIA Shield tablet, trying to use with my VGA projector. Got a mini HDMI to regular HDMI adapter, works great. Then I ordered an HDMI to VGA converter/adapter, works great by itself.

However, I can't use the mini-to-normal HDMI adapter to plug the HDMI to VGA adapter and it work. It just won't work. I retested each adapter singularly and it works great, but I can't convert mini through to VGA. Why is that?

I know they sell mini HDMI to VGA adapters, but why can't I use my adapter array as it is?

Very likely some sort of HDMI handshake issue. HDMI doesn't always like to run through multiple adapters.

So is the general consensus that it simply cannot and won't work? there's nothing I can try or do differently?

In my personal experience I've never seen HDMI work through multiple adaptors. I am guessing noone else has seen this problem, but it makes sense based on how HDMI works.
