I have been looking at the Dell refurb site, which I understand
is a good way to find a decent box at a reasonable price. I notice that
a lot of the Dimension boxes are listed as mini-tower - I don't see
anything on the Dell web site that describes that versus a "regular"
tower - if that exists. What expansion capability does a mini-tower 8400
have? Can one add a floppy, and/or Zip drive, etc?
Also, have people had good luck with the refurbs?

Hi,

There is no 8400 "regular tower" The 8400 being sold on the main Dell
website is the same as the 8400 "mini tower" being sold on the refurb Dell
site.

I don't think there is a 'regular' tower. Companies used to sell bigger
towers but the need for it has mostly passed and so you only usually see
smaller towers these days, except for specialist applications.
The mini allows for 2x 5.25" devices, 2x 3.5" devices, and 2x hard drives.
The micro allows for 2x 5.25" devices, 1x 3.5" device, and 1x hard drive.

I got a Dimension 8300 from the Dell Outlet a while ago and it's been fine.
No problems at all.

I have purchased quite a few computers from the outlet store and have been
very satisfied. Dell has been running many promotions lately and some of
the prices for the outlet stores boxes is pretty expensive compared to a new
computer.

will find much better deals than you can find at the outlet store.

Not always true. The Outlet store runs promotions too.

We recently purchased an 8400 from the outlet store -- loaded -- for around
$800. Even with the best promotions and patience, I couldn't bring it in
under $1700 retail.

micro and mini towers, so I figured that mini-tower was the "full-sized" one.

The one I configured is more powerful two -- dual DVD, 3.4Ghz, etc.

First desk tops were horizonal and were on the desk top itself. The next
generation were "towers" that went on the floor. The third generation are about
2/3 the height (about 14"). Almost all mass produced machines are of the
"mini-tower" configuration.

As for the capabilties of the 8400, Dell will give you a 100% correct answer to
this.
