Minimum requirements for 1080p - 60 FPS - Ultra gaming ?

I'm looking to upgrade my current PC and I'm mostly interested in a new GPU and CPU. Worst case scenario I may also get a motherboard only if I have any compatibility issues with my old one. I'm on a tight budget so I want to save as much money as possible.

I've pretty much settled on a gtx 1070 for GPU. I was going to get a 1060 but some people have told me it can't handle ultra at 60 FPS.
Now all I need is a CPU and I'm not very informed unfortunately. What CPU would guarantee me 60 FPS paired with a gtx 1070 for the next 3 years ? I would like multiple options to choose from if possible. Keep in mind please that I'm on a tight budget.

well Ryzen is your choice then, R5 1600 to be exact:
-free cooler (i heard wraith spire is pretty good)
-6 core 12 thread
-minor disadvantage at gaming performance against intel, but better priced
-can be OCed to reach 1600x performance
u need AM4 slotted mobo for this CPU, b350 series mobo is good enough (except if u're planning on SLI, u better buy the x370 series for that)
with fast RAM, this CPU can compete with i5 7600k just fine, at a fairly better price too (price varies on other places, at least in mine it does)

What would help at that point is to let us know what your current PC has inside. The parts and OS list.

I agree with the 1070. Although some games may need some settings dialed back. Exception to every rule and all that jazz music.

You then ask for a CPU without offering even a socket type.

Thank you very much ! How much of an advantage would an i7 6700K offer compared to the ryzen 1600 or even 1600x ? And would it be worth it for my needs ? I would like to go higher than 60 FPS but I will settle for 60 if anything else is out of my price range.

 


well of course i7 offer better performance (at least in single core performance intel always lead the way) but comparing with the price, i prefer R5 1600, but if u already have compatible mobo with it, u can buy that instead.
going higher than 60 fps is okay, but there won't be any difference if your monitor refresh rate is only 60hz (assuming your monitor refresh rate is 60hz)

My motherboard is an asrock H87 Pro4 and I also have 32 GB of DDR3 RAM. I would preferably like to keep this motherboard but I am willing to get a new one for compatibility sake.

The 4690 is probably the best value for the money and it can still handle even the 1080. The 1070 is a good marriage. In other words the 4690 won't be a ball and chain like the i3-4130 would.

Thank you. My only worry is that it doesn't seem significantly better than the i5 4440 @ 3.10GHz that I currently have. My 4400 is below minimum requirements for most games. I want this PC to guarantee me good gaming performance for at least 3 years, maybe 4. The 4690 seems to be in the same league as the ryzen 1600. What would be a step up from these two and compatible with my motherboard ?

So it's a safe bet to go with the i5 4690 ? 4690K would be even better, right ?
Also, will my 32GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 799MHz bottleneck me too much ? Would replacing that with 8 GB of 2400 MHz DDR4 RAM be better ?

 


Your board isn't compatible with the 4690K. You need a Z97 board for that. That's why I didn't suggest that chip which is the CPU I'm currently using. I paired it with a Z97 PC Mate from MSI.

That board isn't compatible with DDR4 RAM.

Instead of your 1600MHz RAM I chose the 1866MHz RAM. Worth the upgrade? No.
 


why not get i7 4770 then?

I don't doubt you but can you please explain why the 4690K isn't compatible with my motherboard ? I checked the socket and it's 1150. Is there any other reason ?
 


To be more specific the K isn't right for that board. For a 4690 that has a K at the end a Z97 board is required. The 4690's OC options are locked. There are very very light OC options but nothing like a Z97 board will offer. Let's move over to Skylake CPUs. Someone wants to OC. They need a Z170 board for K processors. Let's assume they get a 6700K. It won't overclock on a H110 or a B150. Buy a Z170 and all is well. Kaby lake? Z270. In addition to those reasons the boards not designed for OC'ing aren't prepared for OC'ing. Get a monster of a CPU cooler? That'll solve it right? No. The motherboard isn't designed for the extra heat an OC will offer. They also don't usually offer the extra power necessary for an OC. They simply are designed for non-K processors.
