Minimum SSD Upgrade

I want an SSD card but dont have a lot of cash. I already have a normal hard drive with 1TB so I was wondering if a cheap SSD with low storage would make my pc run faster or do I have to get a 500gb one to fit all of my programs on. Any answers appreciated!
