Misc Driver Question

Why does a driver suddenly cause system wide bugs once there are updates when it was working fine before. I've always been told updating drivers is a good way to fix problems. But if I've used those old drivers for say two years, why would they cause a problem now. Just curious

Well as windows updates rool out and games start using newer technologies that they didnt before so the old drivers may not be optimized for it
