This post was reliant on a misinterpretation of product and price which I realized in retrospect. The External Enclosures I had been looking at were for 2.5" drives, and nothing of a similar design in a similar price range seems to exist for 3.5" drives.

A 4 bay NAS with a mobile processor and slim amounts of soldered on ram, is exactly that until it’s outdated. Even external enclosures can be migrated between devices and scaled up by adding another one, and they’re much cheaper per purchase. I would be willing to compromise some on price, or some on flexibility (obviously the physical size reduction has to be accomplished somehow) but both together ...Even for a pretty, tiny box that feature to price ratio doesn't add up.

Or, a 4 bay NAS running Linux, with non-soldered RAM...
My QNAP came with 4GB, now upgraded to 16GB.

A tiny box that lives in a cabinet under the TV.
