Mixed Eyefinity upgrade? 290 CF worth it?

I have a 290 and a 23" 1080p, 20" 900p, and 39" 1080p tv mounted above.

I'm looking to create a more balanced configuration, preferably a 3+1tv config. but things right now are changing so fast.
With the 970/980 out, the 290 is only $299 aand I'm thinking of getting a second. Thoughts? Is CF reliable? are the troubles worth it? Should I just wait and sell it for a 390x/980ti or would I get more performance per $$$ by adding a second 290?

I was thinking of a 27"1080p, 27/28" 1440p/4k monitor, 27" 1080p configuration so I can Eyefinity in 1080p or 1440p/4k on the single monitor, particularly these:

(usually on sale once in a while fgor $190, but any 27" thin bezel ips will do)
maybe:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236399&cm_re=asus_4k-_-24-236-399-_-Product
(on sale now too *grits teeth*)

AMD has a mixed eyefinity option in Catalyst Control Center, so eyefinity would work almost flawlessly in this configuration. (Believe it or not, it even with my 1080p, 1080p tv, and 900p configuration... it black boxes parts of the monitors not used)
I would need a second 290 for 4k, but 1080p eyefinity and 1440p are possible on high-ultra with my R9 290

Now, 27" in 1080p, would it look alright? I'm already sick of 1080p, and as much as I like the real estate of secondary monitors, I don't want to invest in just 1080p eyefinity. I could get 2x 23.5" 1080p to match my Asus VX238, but then I'm stuck in 1080p with higher resolutions just around the corner.
My friend got 3x 21.5 inch 1080p's for roughly $370, so I feel getting 2x 27" 1080p at say $190, each and 1440p/low end 4k ranging $300-$700 a very large investment.
Or should I just hold off until AMD's Freesync technology releases soon and pay the premium there instead? I've always been in 60fps, and am a little sick of that too.

What should I do? :/
Anyone else in this upgrade dilemma too?

P.S. I will need to fill all 4 spots,
2x DVI for sides, 1x HDMI for TV, 1x Display port in center (would work well for 60hz 4k)
Could I just use a dVI-DP cord for the 1440p with my R9 290, or do I still need an Active Display Port in this day and age? I believe the R9 290 by default has 4 individual signals already, but I would like approval on this :)

I hear you on the setup problems.

That's my setup. Three 25.x" monitors all hooked up with DVI (or mDP to DVI) and a 40" TV off the view to the right over HDMI. But these are 60Hz, 1080, non 3D monitors. I would love to upgrade to 1440, 3D in the center with identical looking but non 3D surround monitors. (Maybe upgrade the TV to a 1080 projector...) 60Hz is fine with me, but I'd like to be able to watch 3D movies so the center monitor should support that. If you don't like 1080 I'd get 1440, but for all three screens. I know AMD supports mixed mode but I wouldn't bother with it. Get same/similar monitors and enjoy.

The problem here is 3 1440p monitors is like running 8k... I would need 4 290's...
I want 1080p eyefinity, its manageable in terms of performance, and single 1440p is possible with 290 as well

4k would need a second 290, but even then, it would run smooth.
Lots of decision making to do :/

I only listed what I would do. As you said, lots of decision making to do so I hope I gave you something to think about. (Hint, I didn't see you say 3D.) I like the idea of 1440, but 1080 is where everything is right now. My idea was the 3D 1080 in the middle, flanked by other non 1080 screens. For me that would be fine. But you seem to want 1440/1080+ with 144hz. And yes, those are expensive.

Two 290Xs should handle that. Won't max everything, but you should be ok.
