Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone could give me some information regarding the Corsair CX600 and CX600M Power supplies, as all the reviews I read seem to contradict each other. Some people say they are fine, others say they are cheap. I'm putting together a build using an FX-8320 and (most likely) and r9 270x, and I just don't want to buy a PSU that might fail on me. Unfortunately I'm also a bit of a budget; if possible I'd like to spend $70-$80 Canadian on the PSU.

Thanks for your help!

Just a couple of days ago, the Corsair CX line of power supplies was lowered from Tier 3 to Tier 4 due to the numerous numbers of them showing up here with problems. And most of these units are less than 2 years old.

By reclassifying those power supplies as Tier 4, what we have been telling people for a long time now is being backed up by the wording in the power supply listing. Those units are not to be used in any system that is used for gaming.

Tier Four
No Japanese capacitors found. Only Taiwanese capacitors and may even include Chinese capacitors. Very basic safety circuits or even thin gauge wiring used. Not for gaming rigs or overclocking systems of any kind. Avoid unless your budget dictates your choice.

Its simple, and in our opinion, it fits the quality of the Corsair CX series power supplies.

When the Corsair CX line was first released back in 2009, they were made by Seasonic, and they were good power supplies. At some point over the years, the manufacturer was changed to Channel Well Technologies. And the quality of the units has plunged. There seems to be a relationship between cheaper capacitors being used and the failures we keep seeing. The units test out well when new, and then a year, two years later, way too many of them are doing things none of us would want to be seeing.

Well thanks everyone for the input, I hadn't realized they were that notorious... I won't be getting one now, that's for sure. That SeaSonic one corndog linked looks quite nice, in CAD it's $104 though. I'll pay that much if it's really better in the long run, but I'd rather find something a little cheaper. Thanks also for the tier list, I'll definitely be looking through that.

The only CX that was made by Seasonic was the CX400, all the others have been made by CWT since they were released. I used 5 of these around the first year they were released since they reviewed well, were at a great price, and hey hadn't started to fail yet. 4 didn't make it past the first year due to bad caps(the fifth lasted longer because i shelved it), one of the capxon caps actually exploded on one unit(should have voided the warranty opened it up and took pictures).

Thanks for the links! I was debating if a 550W would be enough, but if you think it is I may go with that unit. Otherwise I'll pick up the SeaSonic; never used MIR before, but if I understand right they aren't that difficult.

Ok. I was repeating what was said during the discussion last week after I asked if we could lower them to the Tier 4 rank. We had a good discussion, and then the keepers of the list made their decision. And it got lowered. I think most of us here that help out are happy that this change was made. There are still some people here though that think they are great units. But we are all welcome to our opinions. But as the poster a few messages above said, some of these units are downright explosive.
