Mixing CL7 & CL9 Memory

Hello all, I need your help to safely/correctly mix my memory sticks. They are both 1600 mhz, just different Latencies & brands, (the guy from Micro Center told me that I should be fine when I mix them, and the auto settings from my mobo will more than likely set the correct timings)

The 1st is HyperX blu 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL9 Triple Channel
The 2nd is CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800) CL7 Triple Channel

I had the corsair sticks 1st, then added the HyperX's, and system would not boot. So I put the HyperX's in first, and then installed corsairs 2nd, and eventually system would crash. Currently, Im only running just the HyperX's alone, and Im using a lot of memory, about 10gbs of it, and constantly get annoying reminders my memory is maxed out. Im hoping you smart guys can help me get the corsairs in and I should be fine with 18gb of memory til I get the other 12gb of Hyper X.

Oh. I really would like to keep my cpu overclocked @ 3.6ghz, and have both sticks run at 1600mhz, but Im willing to lower cpu speed as long as the sticks can still run at 1600mhz.

Mobo is Asus P6x58d-e
I7-950 Processor

Edit: I forgot to add that, Im mainly using my 3rd partition which only has about 20gbs left on it, so I've disable page file

If you do not have windows 7 pro or better, you will be maxed at 16gb.

Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.
Although, I think the problem has lessened with the newer Intel chipsets. Still,
it is safer to get what you need in one kit.

If you do get it to work, all sticks must run at the same voltage, speed and cas numbers.

IIRC that board will run 24GB, although the ram mixing issue could be a problem is the individual sticks are not compatible. HERE is the Crucial take on it, which seems to match the ASUS specs.

My 1st attempt I tried 8-8-8-24 , it would run, but then crash eventually. Any ideas on some good timings? I also saw some other settings which were letters, I think 1 of them was N or something like that, and had no idea as to what to set that to.

Yes I understand that, but I do not have another $150 to spare for the same Hyper X sticks, so I was hoping to make it on 18gb of memory til I could get the same kit again. Im running Win 7 Ultimate btw.

How would you go about getting it to work? As far as same speed and cas numbers?

try 8-9-9-26 That is what I have my 1600 CL9 sticks running at right now and they all work pretty well (its 2 dual channel kits mixed together kinda similar to your situation) throw 1.55v dram volts at them as well.

Will try that in a little bit, and report back results. What I was thinking about trying to do was either:
1) Try running them on auto @ 1800mhz, or
2) 7-7-7-21 @ 1333mhz,

These are 1,65v sticks.
1600 ram is 1333 ram that can overclock to 1600 if given 1.65v.
Often you need to give the ram a touch more voltage when you have more than 2 sticks.
Using cpu-z with each kit installed separately, see what the xmp specs are, and select the best common denominator.
You might even reduce the speed from 16oo to 1333. It will make little difference in real app performance.

Couple of options with the sticks could try them at 1333 8-8-8-24 2T (maybe even 1T) and start at 1.65 - or try at 1600 9-9-9-27, 2T, 1.65 and the raise the QPIVTT to 1.18 and would try with the Kingston sticks in 1-3-5, the Corsair in 2-4-6 - 😉 Another option would be to take all in to Micro Center and ask for the manager - tell him his guy said they would be fine (just trying to get a sale), you don't appreciate it, so ask them to kindly get them to work together at 1600 😉 (Have done this for clients numerous times at Best Buy when they pull this stuff on their customers - needless to say - BestBuy hates me 😉

Hey, thanks for the info. I havent really had any luck since I've combined them, have had to restart pc about 40 times now. Im running a quick memory test with "memtest" (I know, I shouldve ran probably memtest86 first while OS isnt loaded, but Im kinda short on time, and after all goes well with that test, I will then run memtest86.

As far as your timings, those look pretty good, I have them set to 9-9-9-24 @ 1333 for right now, I also do not have an option to set to 2T, just only 2N. I've always had my qpi @ 1.23xx, never have I went below 1.2xxx...but will give that a try as well because it appears that Im the only one who keeps it set that high. Neither do I lower the voltages below 1.65, seems a lot of ppl get lucky and drop down in the 1.50-1.60 range. Memtest is about 10% complete, testing 15gb of it, other 2gb loaded by OS, will chime in shortly...Thanks for the input

Oh, Kingstons are in in 1-3-5 (A1, B1, C1) and the Corsairs are in 2-4-6 (A2, B2, C2). Glad you mentioned it, but what was your reason for stating so? Is it because the slower sticks should be installed 1st, or because of they contain more memory? Just curious

2N and 2T are interchangeable - used to be AMD used the N designator and Intel the T now it just goes back and forth, have seen a couple mobos that were N then started using T (think it depends on the lead programmer for a given version - they hop those guys arounfd from one mobo to another. Combination, with both slots of a channel filled the stick in the lead or closest to the CPU are the ones first looked at, the second in the same channel sort of becomes the secondary or follower (so look to larger as 1 item, then to the higher CL)

Update: I just ran the memtest for about an hour, to my surprise...no issues. Yaaayyyyyy. Im not trying to "push it", but if possible, I would like to get more juice out my rig. Here is the current setup:

Now that we have that out the way, since 1333mhz and 1600 isnt noticeable with real world apps, I would rather have higher cpu speeds (I've never sucessfully OC'd to 4.0ghz) mainly stay @ 3.4-3.68. Im also very open to your opinions and or a good balace....will also settle for just leaving it as it.
