Mixing Memory

Greetings,

Can I mix sizes of memory in a system? Specifically, I was wondering if I can use a 128Mb Dimm and a 256Mb Dimm, one in each slot, for 384Mb total.

I'd get 2 256Mb sticks, but I already have one 128Mb stick purchased.

Yes you can, and if you're using two different speeds PC100 and PC133 they'll collectively run at the lower speed.

Unless if you're overclocking the RAM, in which case you will be running the RAM at a spec higher than the manufacturer's. When I mix memory sizes, I tend to put the larger stick in the first slot. I'm not sure if it makes any difference though.

I have a question too. I have a 128 SIMM and a 128 DIMM, both PC 133 on an ASUS A7V running a 800-Tbird. The machine appeared to run well but if I run Freespace 2 and a couple other games they crash and give me an invalid fault in VMM (12) and some address. I removed the 128 SIMM and they run fine! DO I have a bad SIMM or is it just that the Tbird and A7V are picky components regarding memory? The DIMM was more expensive than the SIMM...

You should realy start a new thread for this question, cause you may need to give more information.

I've got a feeling that you don't have a SIMM and a DIMM. The ASUS A7V does not support SIMMs, only DIMMs.

Your problem obviously lies with they memory. How did you come across each of the memory modules? Are you sure your not talking about single and double bank memory?

If one of them is ECC (the one that is more expesive possibly) and is mixed with a non-ECC chip then your system will crash if it tries to access past the ECC chip on the memory module. Look at the Memory module. if it has 9chips and the other Memory module has 8chips this is likely to be your problem.

Although start a new thread with your original question and the aswers to my questions and you will get more help and answers :)
