Mixing old and new RAM?

I just bought and upgraded my computer's RAM to 8GB, up from 6GB.
I bought 2x 4gb sticks rather than one 2 GB to add to the other 3.

I was having issues under the XMP profile; one of the sticks wouldn't work.
When I hit the Mem test button on the MoBo it would clock it down to the 1333.

The older RAM 1600 requires 1.65 volts when running in the XMP profile.
IF I detune the older sticks to run at 1333 like the new RAM will they play nice with each other?

Solution
Well that isn't a brand new rig anymore either, could be several causes of the lag, it should run better than it did before for sure however.
Read what your motherboard's manual has to say about adding RAM and what is compatible and how to arrange it (slots).
Generally speaking it isn't a good idea to mix new and old RAM. Sometimes a motherboard can make it all operate at the specifications of lowest performing module (or sometimes lower than that even), but then you are wasting money on the purchase of the higher performing memory.

Tell us your CPU/Motherboard/Memory details and we can actually answer this, without this info we're merely guessing. any 1600 mhz sticks running at 1.65v are bad to begin with, you can get much better memory for the same price. What do the new ones look like? if your board is old you may need a bios update in order to accept 8gb sticks (board might have been manufactured before 8 gb sticks existed)

I re-read the QVL chart on memory but, hasn't been updated in some time....
The MoBo is a ASUS P6X58D-E.
CPU: i7 980X
VC: 1x EVGA 480

I installed the 2 new 4 gb sticks then booted up and all was fine.
What I did was place one of the newer RAM sticks in A1 and the other in B1.

The next day I tried the older 2 gb sticks in Slot C1 and C2.
All seems to be functioning just fine.

All seems to be working now with no system crashes so, to speak of ( fingers crossed). It does lag sometimes... probably due to the timings of the memory. I set the bios to auto and let the computer choose the right timings.
