mkv to mp4 converter with compression

Hello all, Im looking for a preferably free/open source video converter to convert from MKV ripped blurays to mp4 for use on my iphone x, and ipad pro 10.5. I dont want 10GB+ files when carrying them this way, so just changing the container i dont think will do. What is the best software out there i should look at?
