Last week I went to my friends house to play at a Lan Party and during heavy gaming my laptop would lockup. So I started fiddling with the idea of building a lightweight case with an integrated monitor due to the fact that gaming laptops are 1.)usually over $3K and 2.)have trouble dealing with the thermal issues related to having such a small space. I guess I just figured it would be cheaper to buy standard PC components and put them in a lightweight case that I could take to my friends house on the weekends. If the monitor were somehow integrated into this setup all I would have to do is place the tower or desktop on the table and plugin everything else. This brings me to my question. What kinds of cases would be easiest to mod? I could place a flat panel on the side wall of a tower, but then it would send added heat inside the tower. The other option was to have a typical desktop case and the flat panel would be placed with hinges and a stand on the top part of the case. I would greatly appreciate any advice (negative or positive) on any technical issues. Thanks.

That would be possible and I've seen it done. I think a good monitor is more important than a case so I'd go find a really good monitor first. Then get a case to fit it. The easiest way to get the monitor on the case and have some flexibility with it would probably be to get a LCD Monitor Wall Mount kit. That should work fairly well though I wouldn't try fully exending it without some added weight in the bottom of the case :) You will probably need to reinforce the connection point on the case as well.

If you want a small light case just get a shuttle :)

Newegg has a thin Micro ATX case with a handle on top from the junk power supply maker PowMax. The case is OK, it's cheap enough to get a decent SFX sized "Micro ATX" power supply to replace the included one. There are pleanty of performance boards in the Micro ATX form factor, unless you want the latest technology in chipsets.

You could get a really nice nForce2 Micro ATX board and a cheap and fast XP processor for it.
