Not sure if there is a forum for mobiles. I have an old mobile with lots of text messages on it. Is there anyway I can plug it into a PC and copy them across? special software may be needed.

Okay. That is great so far. I am an IT man. I can open the internal storage. Problem is what am I transfering and can I view them?

Folders are
.clipboard, .polaris_temp, .polarisoffice
.thumbnails, 100ANDRO, Alarms, alt_autocycle, Android, CQOTest
WhatsApp -> databases.

The other folders are known to me.

I have checked the folders WhatsApp -> databases. This might be it but has files with extension .crypt12. Don't know how to open these.
It is encrypted. Can only open withe the WhatsApp application, if at all.

https://faq.whatsapp.com/1246476872801203

"WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption for all personal messages that you send and receive to ensure that only you and the person you’re talking to can read or listen to them. With end-to-end encrypted backup, you can also add that same layer of protection to your iCloud and Google Drive backups. "

I see all this, but unless I can get a kind of winzip decription software for these file or get WhatsApp for windows on my PC then it looks like im stuffed.

Correct.
That file you see is encrypted, and can only be decrypted via the WhatsApp application, and your account.

If it could be trivially undone by other means, the encryption wouldn't be much good.
