mobo and windows compatibility?

I am very new to building my own PC and was wondering if it mattered what kind of motherboard I got to not only game, but use as a regular PC ( YouTube, Netflix etc.). I have the MSI 970 Gaming AM3+ AMD 970 6 x SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard on my current build (not ordered) and will be getting windows 8.1. So does it matter what motherboard I have and what operating system?
