Hi guys,

I have a new MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard and need a compatible CPU, any suggestions?

it appears compatible with https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/amd-ryzen-5-5500-hexa-core-3-6ghz-am4-processor/16022401

PC part picker saying that it may not run on old bios... would that mean the computer won't POST or turn on until I update BIOS first?
Feels like a chicken and egg moment. Won't turn on unless updated, can't update without turning on.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes and No. Latest BIOS requirement applies only to Ryzen 5000-series CPUs. If you go with Ryzen 3000-series CPU, latest BIOS isn't needed.

Also, your MoBo has "Flash BIOS button", meaning "simply use an USB key to flash any BIOS within seconds, without installing CPU, memory or graphics card".

How to do it, is written in holy bible of PCs, page 46,

Is this 3000 series that much slower than a Ryzen 5 5500 6 core?
You picked R5 5500 before and now, R5 3600. Diff between the two is negligible,
comparison: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-3600-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-5500/4040vsm1820844

would something like this link help me avoid the flash bios?
Yes, since R5 3600 is the 3000-series CPU.

any other cooler or spacing issues potentially?
None that i can tell, since the heatsinks on MoBo aren't that tall.

@kira-faye the case is an old antec one atx mid tower
budget is basically get a cpu that works with the MSI PRO 550BM-VC without having to flash bios compatibility.

I'm just trying to upgrade the MOBO that failed and I was having issues with the 5500 Ryzen, turns out it appears it's a flash bios situation. I just don't have the time to get a usb and do this, would prefer to plug and play with a 3000 series.
